Quantitative Article Critique Preface This paper is an academic critique of the article written by Yin-Kum Law (2008) titled The role of attribution beliefs, motivation and strategy use in Chinese fifth-gradersââ¬â¢ reading comprehension found in Routledge Taylor amp; Francis Group Educational Research Journal. This article will be broken down by section, with each segment being independently evaluated. This paper is a critique of several different aspects of the research study including: data collection methods, sample and design, hypothesis, review of the literature and findings of the study. Study Design Was the study design appropriate for the study question and objectives? Since the focusing is to see factors with reading comprehension on Chinese pupilsââ¬â¢ fifth-graders from one Hong Kong primary school, the researcher of this article distributed three questionnaires and two reading comprehension test to the school that uses Chinese as the medium instruction. The three questionnaires measured studentsââ¬â¢ implicit beliefs about intelligence and ability, and their self-reported motivation and metacognitive awareness of reading strategies. Also, the reading comprehension tests measured studentsââ¬â¢ higher-order reading proficiency. The study design is appropriate with technique used to see the relationship between these three strategies and studentsââ¬â¢ reading proficiency - to answer factors which might contribute to reading proficiency.
